1. O you who killed yourself, after the failure

Of your right hand to kill her who made your life wretched.

  2. Your dreadful death has grieved every young man

Whose heart, like yours, love's arrow has struck.

  3. And indeed, the one who weeps most for you in sorrow

Is a captive of love whose anguish lovers hold in awe.

  4. Yes, I shall mourn you in the verse whose voice

My soul has devoted to the martyrs of the people.

  5. How could you assault this beloved? How

Cruel your heart is, you there, and how unflinching!

  6. Does the soul reveal itself in the oppressor's violence, so we should not

Weep for your youth, since you squandered its bloom?

  7. Or was it love's frenzy, whose fury despair aroused?

And the soul cannot endure despair's fury.

  8. So killing her you love became easy for you; and how often

Has a witless lover slain his beloved!

  9. And what you had fired at her in error

Struck your heart fatally when you aimed it true.

  10. You have taught the one whose desire in love eluded him

What path brings his death near.

  11. To you, a greeting from a lovesick man who tries to

Meet your fate, if he cannot quench his burning thirst.
