1. The fertile valley and its people have ignored me,

    And in its every pass there is a noble deed of mine.

  2. My excuse to it for my silence is my illness;

    But what excuse have my people for their silence about me?

  3. And in friendly company, no companion remains for me,

    And my nerves leave me in the loneliness of the jinn.

  4. Nothing ails me but their neglect of the bond;

    This is what wears me down, and this is what exhausts me.

  5. And had they asked after me, that would have been a kindness from them;

    It would have been the cure, and it would have been enough.
