both have borne witness for me to the soundness of my faith.

  2. An impulse from my innate nature, before I recited

a book, guided me to certainty.

  3. Whoever may have held to beliefs by

imitation, I have stood firm through proof.

  4. I lived as a Muslim, not because of my mother's Islam

or my father's, or the emir's, or the sultan's.

  5. Even if I had grown up and lived

among a people who worshipped idols,

  6. I would have found no religion but Ahmad's more worthy

of being followed than all other religions.
