  1. And what made me renounce love was that I saw it

    As ruin for my soul, breeding resentment and hatred.

  2. When it took hold, it distracted me from God and guidance,

    And from my family and livelihood, and robbed me of sound judgment.

  3. And if it left my heart, I changed, meeting

    My beloved as my enemy and lavishing rejection upon him.

  4. So now, whenever I behold beauty that delights me,

    I recall its aftermath and turn away, retreating.
