1. We read the communiqué proclaiming reproach and approval;

    Yet we saw nothing new in the communiqué.

  2. Your mouths and your narrators address us,

    And your troops hurl fire and iron.

  3. And many an orator among you, atop a pulpit,

    Stirs up flashes of lightning and peals of thunder above us.

  4. You want an 'Amen' to what you have decreed,

    And you want us bowing and prostrating ourselves.

  5. And what you called protection was nothing

    But bitter slavery and black chains.

  6. You say, 'We fought for the freedom of humankind,'

    Yet you hope that the unbowed will remain slaves.

  7. And no unarmed man among us feared your troops' brutality

    As much as he feared your oaths and pledges.

  8. There, the people's delegation, among its witnesses,

    Watches a delegation of yours and witnesses.

  9. There, the country's hopes and its rightful claim

    Grow and gain strength in resources and numbers.

  10. So if you act justly, we shall be honored friends;

    But if you act unjustly, accord will be far off.

  11. And none is free except one who dies as a sacrifice,

    And none is righteous except one who dies as a martyr.
