1. I console the minister of the two nations and complain

    to him of fate over the death of his father.

  2. Gone is the last of the generation that paved the paths

    to glory for the generation that will follow it.

  3. Your father was the father of free men throughout the earth;

    so their loss in him is like your own.

  4. And he who has passed his virtues on to his sons

    surely lives on in this world as long as his sons live.

  5. And though we find no concern to distract us from him,

    in you those who miss him find all they need in his stead.

  6. And it would have been more fitting for him to live until the time

    when you could see what you had hoped for and show it to him.
