1. Ali, rule has passed to you, and they vied for

    your ministry's guidance—the parties and the factions.

  2. You summoned them; they answered, met, and went forth,

    and all were confident in the goal and eager for it.

  3. That was no banquet, but for them it was

    provisions for the struggle, quenching thirst and satisfying hunger.

  4. And their equipment for peace and battle was what they witnessed

    of private counsel in your two meeting places, and what they heard.

  5. You came forward while the foe, in his unyielding resolve,

    was threatening the realm like a tyrant and wresting it away.

  6. And you sought refuge from him with the cause's champions, not

    leaving him any claim against you, nor letting one stand.

  7. And you went in the company of the righteous, resolved

    to complete what they had begun and undertaken.

  8. And the tyrant maneuvered with tricks, as was his habit;

    yet his tricks did not touch you, for you had spoken frankly to him.

  9. And he relented after stubbornly pressing his terms,

    and thought that what you had resolved upon would not happen.

  10. It is as though today, through what you perceive

    of his two resources, you foresee his final outcome.

  11. And you are not the first to have endured his policy;

    and today is your day: neither despair nor greed.

  12. So shall I see him and my people moving together,

    with ample room in the sky, as on earth?

  13. Each of the two sides is a ready helper to the other,

    so there is neither leader nor follower.

  14. And he takes only as much as they have taken,

    and pays only as much as they have paid.

  15. He is near, yet they cannot do without him,

    nor he without them, nor can either find refuge from the other.

  16. The benefits people share reach

    what neither individuals nor groups can attain.

  17. Whoever finds no pasture in the people's hearts

    has no pasture in the people's lands.

  18. If the foe brings the pact, you can rest easy with it;

    and if he turns away, there is neither fear nor dismay.

  19. And if he exceeds what the ally will accept,

    then you have what will restrain the angry one.

  20. And you know him best when friendship is unbroken,

    and you know him best when friendship is severed.

  21. Even if his troops and his statesmen invaded the world,

    they would not budge the valley's front, nor split it.

  22. I am the record that tallies and remembers what

    stands to the reformers' credit, and rewards them for what they have done.

  23. So take your share of my poetry, as they have taken theirs,

    and you have benefited my country just as they have.
