I see you promised me, so I thought I
would attain what I seek from you.
So I wasted the nights, reassured,
and wasting them proved one of the gravest sins,
because afterward you broke the promise made to me.
So I returned with my disappointment, sorrowful and bewildered.
And indeed my pain, had you said, 'Leave me;
for I cannot do what you hope for,'
would surely be better than your deceitful words to me:
'On my head, and from my eyes—at your service!'
And I am no ruler whose harm you fear,
so that you say whatever pleases him,
showing him love and approval while hiding
hatred for him, while he knows nothing of hidden feelings.
But I am a man who, if one day he attains
his aims through your hand, is grateful;
and if you offer him an excuse, so he may strive
and meet a face other than yours, he will excuse you.
