1. I am free in heart and body,

    yet I am shackled by time.

  2. How long must I see my hopes clearly before me,

    their paths plain, as I turn my reins toward them?

  3. Whenever I seek to attain them, there confront me

    obstacles hidden from my sight.

  4. It is as though, amid the things I see, I were enclosed

    by glass of solid construction.

  5. And glass may indeed tarnish, so that the two eyes

    see nothing beyond it—

  6. like a blind man to whom something appears in a dream,

    and he sees it with the eye of one awake;

  7. but when he wakes, his blindness returns,

    and he weeps in anguish at being denied.
