1. In what tongue shall I address you today?

Had you been at a festival, I would have sung.

  2. And had you all been at a gathering of mourning

for a band that perished, I would have wept and made others weep.

  3. But your own desires divided you,

so no gathering place or home was free of quarrels.

  4. You fought over the world to no avail,

and neither water nor oil remained in the vessel.

  5. What judgment would you accept among yourselves,

when I have come to you with clear proofs and spoken?

  6. If I cannot gain a hearing from the living,

then the living and the dead are the same to me.

  7. The nights will reveal among you what you did not know

and bring what I feared and concealed.

  8. The appointed time has drawn near to you; whom do you have

to ward off what I feared and guarded against?

  9. Glory lies only in the deed I do well

for my people, as I hoped and wished.

  10. Even if I possessed nothing but my life,

I would give it to pay my homeland its due and fulfill my duty.
