1. In the middle of a bridge, they

    met one day—two ewes,

  2. both renowned for arrogance,

    both coarse and stubborn.

  3. One of them looked upon the

    other with a contemptuous eye.

  4. She drew near and cried, “Now clear

    the road for me—without delay!”

  5. The other answered haughtily,

“I will not budge from where I stand.”

  6. Their quarrel grew fiercer,

and, enraged, they shoved each other,

  7. until both plunged into the depths

of the vast and surging sea.

  8. The calamity was grave; they cried,

    lamenting what had happened:

  9. “Does all this boundless space comfort us

    now, amid such humiliation?

  10. Alas for the consequence of carrying

ferocity to the point of mutual ruin!”

  11. Indeed, safety and dignity

are found in tolerance and gentleness.
