1. O mistress of a realm that encompassed all people,

And spreader of justice that reached still farther,

  2. And bearer of the radiant crown, as though

It were studded with the blossoms of bright stars,

  3. And vanquisher of evildoers through a power

To which the one seeking refuge flees for help,

  4. And sovereign of the sea, whose depths are filled

With fleets that guard and defend what you ruled,

  5. And conqueror of lands in east and west,

From which no sunrise is hidden,

  6. And mother of kings who strive for greatness:

Each of them is devoted to rule and conquest.

  7. Death came to you after eighty years, extinguishing

The light of a life that shone across the earth.

  8. No gathering of guards surrounding you could turn it back,

Nor those who prayed and pleaded for your recovery.

  9. You grieved a people whose affection for you was sincere,

And they began to writhe in their pain.

  10. The land nearly melted in the flames of grief,

And the sea, still more distraught, nearly caught fire.

  11. You left soldiers whom no enemy arrows

Had struck in the heart as sharply as the news of your death.

  12. They had sought your favor through their campaigns,

And in your name they attacked and struck their foes.

  13. Can their feet stand firm today, when sorrow

Diminishes so much of their courage?

  14. This death has now become a lesson

For anyone who covets this lowly world.
