1. O victim of al-Sharif, before you was humbled

a woman; so let women console you.

  2. The woman of the two skins had less excuse

than you in her plight, so ease your distress.

  3. She feared spilling ghee upon the

earth, while you feared he would spill your blood.

  4. A rank angered al-Sharif, and he would not

refrain from punishment to spare you.

  5. Relying on drunkenness, he came to

savor your complaints and relish your tears.

  6. Revenge, I think, is a greater disgrace

than submission in which you lost your sense of shame.

  7. If only those titles, if you would agree,

O victim of titles, could have been your ransom.

  8. He suffered from your harm what you had suffered

from his, and what hurt you hurt him.

  9. Wretched the fame you both loved, that it might live

amid disgrace: his hope and yours.

  10. Who, do you think, after this has more cause for pride

on a wedding day: his women or yours?
