1. I have never ceased longing for a fire kindled for those two,

    until I thought the torment of fire itself had grown sweet.

  2. Smoke rises, black among its tresses;

    within it, a veil of raw gold lies torn away.

  3. It is crowned with ambergris commingled with musk,

    wreathed in pomegranate blossom, and clothed in gold.

  4. Light frolics merrily along its edges,

    while wine thunders in dread within its reaches.

  5. Sparks fly from it, and alongside them runs

    lightning drawing near—or meeting a star ablaze.

  6. Were it a time for scattering, I would take them for pearls;

    or a time of vengeance, I would take them for meteors.

  7. Night stands within it, naked of its garments,

    drunk, having torn the robes of darkness in rapture.

  8. I swear by the eye: had you appeared when it died down,

    I would have made the choicest of my limbs fuel for it.
