1. I fell in love with a devourer of lions, a horseman,

    Broad in reach, in chest, and in the field.

  2. A moon among the Turks—you would swear he is the

    Chaste maiden upon a lean-flanked stallion.

  3. He shoots at hearts with his twin glances and his arrow;

    So I marveled at how alike the two arrows were.

  4. The full moon in a cloud's shade, and the sand dune

    In his saddle, and the branch within his caftan.

  5. I grew fond of his forelock and radiant brow, though

    Night's darkness and dawn had never been in harmony.

  6. And he shot at hearts with his twin glances and his arrow;

    So I marveled at how alike the two arrows were.

  7. A hero, his sword-belts like a crossbeam, and his

    Fragrant eyebrow like his resonant bow.

  8. I greeted him; he drew near and showered my palm

    With kisses—if only my mouth were in place of my fingertips!

  9. And I beguiled him with the cup until he yielded to me,

    And warded off the prescribed punishment from myself through secrecy.

  10. And a man, while a chance for pleasure engrosses him,

    Forgets the consequences and feels safe from fortune's blows.
