A month's separation from you, to glory's chagrin,
is harder on me than the month of fasting.
And how can I visit you while the rain clouds weep
over my house with pouring showers?
And it was a dwelling with a cheerful face,
but became a valley difficult to reach,
and a sea—among its wonders is my making my way
to you thirsty, though the sea is overflowing.
My daughters are like frogs in its damp earth,
and my family like pigeons in the window openings.
I cry out whenever clouds rise
and lightning flashes make us weep by smiling:
Let that fall around us, not upon us!
May God spare us your harm, O cloud!
Within it, the bowing walls came tumbling down,
in prostration to the thunderclaps, without an imam.
As though the safeguarded things I had stored within it
lay at the tents' wide-open entrances.
So no door bars the way, nor any wall
stops a gaze from falling on a face forbidden to it.
And what was the garden of Paradise has become
playgrounds for jinn and nests for owls.
