1. I wore poverty until my hem began

to cramp my movements within it, like my collar.

  2. And I struggled to meet my needs after hardship,

and fended off the burdens of living after privation.

  3. For I have set my clothes chest alight,

and water has been poured into the flour jar.

  4. Is there among people—O people!—a noble man

to brighten the face of one sorely tried and in want?

  5. I need my brother when my throne is toppled

and I find myself in straits for my livelihood.

  6. But when some part of my lot improves,

    then everyone is my friend.
