1. I leave Baghdad, not out of hatred,

and journey by night toward separation, not out of longing.

  2. I go in the evening and in the morning, and I have two guides:

the dignity of self-respect and the humiliation of poverty.

  3. And I hope for a young man who honors generosity,

as the earth hoped for steady rains to fall.
