1. Listen to a tale, so you may relate it one day

    From memory, whenever a questioner asks,

  2. How the God of creation revealed His blessing

    Among us, and made His earliest signs known to us.

  3. There were winds and water in abundance,

    And darkness, leaving neither fissure nor gap.

  4. Then He commanded the black darkness, and it lifted,

    And removed the water from what it had occupied.

  5. And spread the earth wide, then measured it out,

    Level beneath the sky, just as He had done.

  6. And made the sun an unmistakable boundary;

    Between the day and the night He made a division.

  7. He completed His creation in six days,

    And His final act was to shape the man.

  8. He called him Adam aloud, and he answered Him,

    With a breath of the spirit in the body that had been molded.

  9. Then He granted him Paradise as an inheritance, to inhabit,

    And his wife He fashioned from his rib.

  10. His Lord forbade him nothing but a single tree

    Among the goodly trees, to smell it or eat from it.

  11. Now the speckled serpent, when it was created, was

    Like a she-camel or a camel in form, as you see.

  12. Then both turned to the tree they had been forbidden to eat from,

    At Eve's bidding; she harbored no deceit toward him.

  13. Both sewed, when stripped of their clothing,

    From fig leaves, a garment that had not been spun.

  14. So God cursed her when she led His vicegerent astray,

    For as long as nights endure, and set her no term:

  15. She crawls on her belly through time, as long as she lives,

    And she eats dust, from rough ground or smooth.

  16. So our two parents toiled during their lives,

    And brought hunger, afflictions, and illnesses into being.

  17. And they were given dominion and the Gospel, which we read;

    With its wisdom we heal our minds of ailments,

  18. Not out of any need, but only to make us

    Lords above all creatures, just as He had done.
