Tell Umm al-Banīn, if my death should come,
Tell Umm al-Banin, if my hour of death comes,
to mourn me for meeting battle beneath the dust-cloud,
Let her weep for me—for combat beneath the swirling dust,
and for donning supple mail that covers my clothes,
And for wearing gleaming mail that covers my clothes,
with a helmet above it bright as lamplight;
Above it, a helmet like the light of a lamp;
and for raising my fire upon the hilltop,
And for my raising my fire upon the hill,
a beacon for the lost while night is black;
As a beacon for the lost traveler, while the night is dark;
and for charging my bay horse into the thick of—
And for my charging with the bay steed into the thick of
death—a place from which scarcely anyone escapes alive.
Death—a place where few of them survive.
