Gray hair arrived with its retinue—no welcome!
And youth saw its place and so withdrew.
A hateful guest—I see no refuge for myself.
I fled from it, but found no escape for myself.
I was given, in place of sweet living and the bliss of the
two lifetimes, sorrow both present and hidden.
And indeed, youth used to accompany me, and I would not
perform with it anything but the most upright deeds.
And indeed, I preserved its place and cared for it,
And made it the dearest and closest to me.
