I carefully chose among them, and never ceased
preparing a tall, noble horse with a lean face.
I raised him, never neglecting his needs.
An eye would see him, when displayed, looking forlorn.
I trained him until his flesh grew firm,
tending him under cover and riding at ease.
He spent the summer tearing the covering from his back,
outstripping fine horses, vigorous and impetuous.
He became like the forepart of a spear, high-built and broad-chested,
holding his unruly pride in check.
