O rider of the sturdy she-camel, like a boulder from a mountain peak,
O rider of the sturdy she-camel, like a mountain boulder,
may God prosper you, draw you near, and show you mercy,
May God set you right, draw you near, and show you mercy,
if you convey and faithfully deliver these words
If you convey and deliver the words
from me to ʿUbayd ibn Yazīd—if only he understood!
From me to Ubayd son of Yazid—if only he knew.
The peoples already know that One will exact vengeance
The peoples already know that vengeance will be taken
upon you, upon the mother who received you, and upon an uncle:
On you, and on the mother who received you, and on a paternal uncle,
a Lord who requites evil deeds, whoever has done wrong.
By a Lord who repays wrongdoers for their evil deeds.
I have warned you of the fierce assault of a lion smoldering with rage—
I have warned you of violence from an enraged lion,
a marauding father of two cubs, ferocious and ravenous for flesh.
Pouncing, father of two cubs, restless and hungry for flesh.
Go back to your mother; let her spread your bed, and sleep—
So return to your mother; let her make your bed, and sleep,
back to an old crone whose head is like a standing stone.
To an old woman whose head is like a cairn.
And eat, for God is the Provider of all food.
And eat, for God is the provider of food.
