1. It is sorrow enough that horses are pierced by lances,

While I wake bound, my bonds tightened upon me.

  2. When you rise, the iron restrains me, and shut are

Doors before me that deafen the caller.

  3. And I once had abundant wealth and brothers,

So now I am alone among them, with no brother of my own.

  4. Then if I die, it will be a wish I have fulfilled,

And I shall have left Sa'd alone, and the hopes behind.

  5. And my body has wasted away because, at every sunrise,

I wrestle with a solid shackle that has worn me down.

  6. So God bless me, on the day I am left bound,

And my family and my men forget me.

  7. A prisoner, barred from the renewed battle, though it has come into view,

While others that day wield the tall lances.

  8. And to God I make a pledge I will not break:

If relief is granted, I will not visit the wine shops.

  9. Bring my weapons—may you have no father!—for I

See the war only growing more prolonged.
