1. When we saw horses with white-marked legs,

    and a people of aggression in a clamorous host,

  2. we flew toward them on every long-striding horse,

    and every one whose gleaming hide was like gold,

  3. with every straightened, quivering spear,

    its point like a tongue of flame,

  4. and every keen sword bearing a mark along its blade,

    and every striped Mashrafi sword, white as salt,

  5. and every ample coat of doubled mail,

    woven by David, pure and sound.

  6. When we met, speech died; and

    death turned like a millstone upon its axle.

  7. Each of us tried to save his companion

    at the cost of himself, while souls were in distress.

  8. When they charged, we did not leave our positions;

    and when we charged, they sank to their knees.
