1. It is a day of doubt, O ʿAlī,

    and its evil has been feared ever since it came to be.

  2. The air's robe is scented

    with musk, and its mantle with ambergris.

  3. The water wears a silvery shirt,

    and the earth's mantle is green:

  4. plants whose blossoms are raised

    in the garden by falling drops of dew.

  5. And a man of sense, if this

    day were in Ramadan, would break his fast.

  6. And we have a few leftovers that will

    be our day's allotted sustenance;

  7. and yellow wine whose lifetime

    Kisrā and Caesar witnessed.

  8. And our conversation is what you already

    know, and our poetry what you know best.

  9. So rouse yourself for us; let us quaff from

    whichever of our cups is largest.

  10. Or do not—for you are a fool

    if you say that you will be excused.
