1. Bring me near the wine jar—may my father be your ransom.

And drink, bring the large cup, and sob.

  2. Do you not see the dew, how it glitters in

the eyes of blossoms that beckon to delight?

  3. In every eye the dew has a pearl,

like a tear on the eyelids of one who sobs.

  4. And dawn's sharp swords have been unsheathed,

and night has resolved to flee from it.

  5. And the sky wears a musk-scented robe

that lightning flashes have inscribed in gold.

  6. Then bring her like a bride, flushed in the

cheeks, in a head-veil of bubbles—

  7. she would almost be air bearing the fragrance of

ambergris, were she not made from grapes—

  8. from the hand of one content with rejection; and she has

grown angry, in her love for him, at anger itself.

  9. Then, if you could see the cup when he mixes it,

you would see one of the most wondrous marvels:

  10. fire enclosed in glass, kindled by the

water, and pearls circling in flame.
