مُكَحَّلٌ بِالدَّعَجِ
مُنَقَّبٌ بِالغَنَجِ
Naturally kohl-lined with deep-eyed darkness,
Kohled with his eyes' deep blackness,
veiled in coquettish grace,
Veiled in coquetry,
مُعَصْفَرُ التُّفّاحِ في
خَدِ مَليحِ الضَّرَجِ
his apple-cheek safflower-tinted upon
With safflower-dyed apples upon
the cheek of a beauty, crimson-flushed.
A cheek of lovely blush.
جَمَّشَهُ الشَّعْرُ وما
ذاكَ لِطولِ الحُجَجِ
The hair has caressed him—yet
Hair has caressed him, yet not
that is not from long years;
Because of the length of years;
وإِنَّما عَارِضُهُ
شَنَّفَهُ بالسَّبَجِ
it is only that his side-whisker
Rather, the down on his cheek
has decked him with earrings of jet.
Has adorned him with jet earrings.
