1. What ails Suʿdā, that she has failed to keep her tryst with me,

    and made herself ready to cut me off and keep away from me?

  2. O Suʿād, have I any fault, save that I am a man

    whose heart love for you has engrossed?

  3. And indeed, you drew near and were not ungenerous,

  4. lightning flashes from your bounty gleamed, but brought no rain;

    the enemies’ lies are thunderbolts of menace.
