1. Whence comes the blaze of the night-traveling cloud?

And how has its downpour covered the face of the earth?

  2. Has it sought my eyelids’ help, so they come to its aid?

Or has it borrowed my heart, which sets it aflame?

  3. By al-Karkh in Baghdad is one who gives me solace;

were it not for composure, I would never cease lamenting him.

  4. And a friend—I have not kept patience company since distant grew

his dwellings; and I find I do not keep patience company.

  5. Every day, something keeps my eye sleepless

from remembering him, and something torments my heart.

  6. He kept driving me away from him, while I followed him,

and persisted in wronging me, while I appeased him,

  7. until separation turned in my favor through his long coldness,

and made easy for me a path I had dreaded.

  8. And it was not distance that afflicted me, but his ways,

nor parting that grieved me, but his shunning me.

  9. Had my heart, despite the anguish within it,

been in my hand on the day of separation, its way of escape would not have narrowed.

  10. Then I would willingly have given it away among them,

so I would not be unwilling when robbed of it.

  11. A lost thing willingly yielded by the soul is not

like one it fights to keep, then is robbed of.
