1. And whenever I sharpened my mind with your words,

    a sign of what lies within souls would arise for me.

  2. And the finest thing anyone has said of you is a prayer

    in which intention and acceptance have met,

  3. and gratitude, as though the sun were intent on spreading it;

    for in every land there is a bearer of news and a messenger.

  4. Both spread the fragrance of kindness, until it is as though

    wine were gleaming on a day of the north wind.

  5. And how many favors you bestow! Were thanks for them attempted

    by a well-prepared tongue, faltering would overtake it.

  6. I charge myself to match their freely given bounty

    with my effort—yet can little repay much?

  7. For if I do not proclaim my thanks to you, then I—

    and far be a miser's nature from me—am a miser.
