1. I harmed myself while seeking its good,

and tangled with a wolf I cannot fend off.

  2. My own hand shot arrows at me; I felt no impact from them

until my arrows struck my fatal spot.

  3. How many an error, if a man's fortune favored him,

would be deemed right, and he would seek still higher rank through it!

  4. And my sin is great, yet I am repentant,

and whoever repents sincerely has exerted his utmost.

  5. And if the prince's chastisement of his servant

were a judge over the disobedient, it would deter them amply.

  6. Even if Pharaoh betrayed him, he would be safe and obedient,

even if Moses had not turned the staff into a slithering serpent.

  7. And were I a sin, beside his forbearance I would be

a turmoil of dust, neither answered nor summoned.

  8. And the meddling of a group has increased my offense,

with tongues that knew no piety—so, listen:

  9. They claimed that I belittled his favor, through which

I rose above the celestial spheres and the seven ranks.

  10. Then I would have cast off my pledge and abandoned my faith,

and in my belief in God's oneness, defied reason and religious law.

  11. And if my utterance or my tongue ever voiced it,

then may it never pass a night without deserving to be cut off.

  12. Would I deny the light of the radiant sun,

and claim that rain does not make crops grow?

  13. So if what they said was true, as they claimed,

then why did I come afterward, hastening to his door?

  14. So may the one who appointed him always expect his wishes to come true,

and may whoever opposed him always expect calamities.

  15. And may the days never cease bringing glad tidings

to him, revealing a crack in his envier's heart:

  16. victories following one after another,

as words, in their rhymed prose, follow rhyme upon rhyme.
