1. Were it not for my hope of meeting him again,

    I would not remain alive one hour in his absence.

  2. A resting place for him forever—my heart is his dwelling;

    never once did the length of his stay there grow wearisome.

  3. A supple bough whenever he sways in his arena,

    a lion whenever he rages in battle.

  4. Within the eyelid of his eye and the sheath of his saber

    are two swords, unlike in where they turn:

  5. with one he assails those who love him,

    and with the other he assails his enemies.

  6. A moon who became my soul, then went away, parting from me—

    yet the body's continued existence is sustained by the soul.

  7. My wonder is that I lived after parting from him,

    and my sorrow, if I die before meeting him.

  8. Had I not desired my sight in order to behold his face,

    I would have had no eagerness to preserve it.
