1. The rain awoke after sleep and poured in torrents;

    it kept the earth awake until she wearied of sleeplessness.

  2. The blossoms emerged scattered and gleaming,

    and the meadow was given drink both morning and evening.

  3. The pools heaved, until a quarter of the sky leaned down,

    drew near to the earth, and the two embraced.

  4. The knolls almost dissolved through it into sodden soil,

    while the face of the earth clothed itself in leaves.

  5. It clung to the horizon so long that most of us

    would forget the stars—or think dawn would never bloom.

  6. It satisfied us and lavished so much that the greediest among us said:

    “We fault it for no trait but its extravagance.”

  7. The face of the earth kept being given its copious bounty,

    until I imagined the hills were choking, unable to swallow.
