1. When your eyes look out toward one flank of a hill,

another reveals vistas from its heights.

  2. Its blossoms laugh with us, as though

among the meadows we were wooing beloveds.

  3. The daisies smiled there, and I imagined them

welcoming you with delight, playfully teasing.

  4. The rose loosened its veil and swayed, claiming,

by its visible signs, kinship with the roses of cheeks.

  5. I say—though upon the earth there is only a hollow

embracing a meadow that draws close around it—

  6. did the master’s hand spend the night amid its gardens,

pouring forth, or did it bestow clouds upon them?

  7. Did he clothe it in his radiant virtues, until

its constellations revealed to us a single star?

  8. Or did the thoughts of his mind embroider its borders,

    displaying exquisite floral wonders?

  9. Did the zephyr stir its slender boughs as he would tremble

when, as a petitioner, your palm touched both his hands?

  10. I fancied him yearning toward it; so it adorned itself,

hoping he would choose it for his pleasure-ground.
