O breeze of the bān trees, blow
O breeze of the bān trees, blow
over the lover's traces.
over the traces of the lover.
What burden would it be to you if
And what harm would it do you if
you kindled the fires of my heart?
you kindled the fires of my heart?
Even if you conceal Layla's secret,
If you conceal Layla’s secret,
her fragrance makes her known.
her fragrance tells of her [probable intended reading].
Otherwise, why should her perfume
Or if not, why does her fragrance
take minds captive and draw them into passion?
captivate minds and stir desire?
She sent me a message
She offered me a message;
that I understood, unlike my companions.
you understood it, unlike my companions.
At once I was dispossessed,
So at once it became lawful to despoil me,
and I alone among them all was plundered.
me alone among all, and to plunder me.
O seeker of Layla's quarter—[ذ]
O seeker of Layla’s encampment [isolated dhāl],
my very being is her sanctuary; circumambulate me.
my essence is her sanctuary, so circle around me.
Call out my name, and you will find her
And call out my name: you will find her
answering upon my tongue.
answering upon my tongue.
