1. If your eyes have stolen my sleep without cause,

    Then plunder, O sister of Sa‘d, is the Arabs' custom.

  2. And you have stolen the slumber of everyone;

    That is why your eyelid is languid with fatigue.

  3. Is that a gleam of lightning flashing from Iḍam,

    Or have you smiled, and this is the gleam of pearly teeth?

  4. And is that your fire blazing at al-Jar‘ā’,

    Or is that your cheek, glowing with flame?

  5. May God never rescue from the fire of love's anguish

    My heart, which never turns away from love for you.

  6. If it is tormented with fire born of love for her

    By Nu‘m, then that is bliss unveiled.

  7. Whoever wishes to speak of anyone but her should seek someone

    Other than me, for speaking of anyone but her is not my desire.

  8. If hopes have told him that I would ever

    Forget my love for her, then he has listened to falsehood.
