1. Whose tents gleam at Dhu Taluh?

    The fragrance of yarrow and wormwood wafts forth.

  2. Dwellings in al-Awasim, upon a slope,

    Salma's—with tears forever streaming.

  3. Her mouth smiled while the night was dark,

    So she roused the drinking companions for the morning draught.

  4. And how can night endure alongside day,

    Especially for one with clear sight?

  5. O supple-figured one, restore to my body

    With your cup—O may my soul ransom you!—my spirit.

  6. For through it comes my life after my death;

    For this reason it was called the blood of the Messiah.

  7. Do you not see that the doves have sung

    In a melody obscure in meaning, yet eloquent?

  8. They remind you of ardent longing and youthful dalliance,

    And annul the decree of your sincere repentance.
