1. I remembered you, and my heart quaked with yearning

For you; I have no escape from your bonds.

  2. I was terrified by the sudden loss of union,

And that is a terror from which there is no refuge.

  3. My remaining life is spilled on passion's path,

And my heart is flung into the fires of yearning.

  4. My streaming tears are mingled with blood,

And that is only because my heart is cut to pieces.

  5. I have forgotten solace, and love is an affliction

That bewilders the keenest expert, accomplished though he is.

  6. Leave me, you two, for I did not expose my lifeblood to love,

Yet love's arrows pierce the heart.

  7. My renunciation of pleasures withered in yearning for you,

As though the rain-clouds' downpour were borrowed from me.

  8. The flame of sorrow gleams between my ribs,

And my heart has no deliverer from his two cheek-locks.

  9. I became abased before a beloved who is glory itself,

Yet I take pleasure in my abasement.

  10. Your covenant is kept, and your right is binding,

And love for you is decreed, and you are its enforcer.
