1. I yearned for the days that were and then passed away.

    And here I am in darkness, seeking dawn.

  2. Scorched by the heart’s fire, I do not beautify my sorrow.

    Drowning in the water of tears, I do not know how to swim.

  3. You are veiled; I have no means of meeting you.

    Yet, if I were to sober, I would thirst for your love.

  4. My heart and my eyelids are flame and tears—

    so now a downpour, and now scorching heat.

  5. The mention of love was sweet to me until I experienced it.

    Then I found that earnestness is nothing like jest.

  6. A beloved for whose love I willingly forsook creation;

    and for his sake I turned away from remembering them.

  7. I decreed that my heart keep watch at his gate;

    perhaps he who shuts the doors will follow their closing with an opening.

  8. I was envied for the tears I shed over you,

    and that is because love has been proved true by their outpouring.

  9. I beg your mercy: I cannot endure being apart from you.

    So if I win no love from you, then grant me pardon.

  10. My gaze and my hearing are forbidden to the two Eids,

    for you, O my master, are my Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
