1. My tears refused all but pouring forth; perhaps they

    will bear witness before my beloved to my hidden love.

  2. I drew near, and he drove me away; I returned, and he turned me back.

    So he does not draw me near, nor do I go away.

  3. I was stricken by the loss of one I had found.

    So no flow of tears abates, nor is love's anguish praised.

  4. Love creeps, ablaze, between the ribs;

    the blaze of my yearning within it leads the heart to ruin.

  5. Leave me be—for whoever has tasted love, then failed to attain

    union with a beloved—how can he not sigh?

  6. My claims of grief against you are well-founded:

    for my heart throbs, and my eyelid is kept sleepless.

  7. My blood is shed because of you, and my tears are poured forth;

    so my heart, in loving you, is mended where it falls to ruin.

  8. Buried treasures of love in the tombs of the ribs

    have, through you, a resurrection each day and an appointed meeting.

  9. My darkness, when you grant union, is an everlasting day;

    and my day, when I am driven away, is an unending night.

  10. Your nearness is the utmost of what I love and desire;

    so if I attain it, it is everlasting bliss.
