Secure for my longing a pledge of protection from anguish,
and shelter me from my burning grief and my suffering.
O prince over the fair! And my heart
forever flutters for him like a banner.
And in Najd, Arabs encamped have neglected
the pledge of protection due to lovers as guests.
They pitched the fair woman's tent in the meadow
and made her rivers flow from my weeping.
And leave my tears for al-ʿAqīq—whence
could my tears have carnelian, but for my blood?
For they—may I never lose them—have unleashed my tears,
and my heart is one of their captives.
In eyes with languid lids lies my sickness;
O my people! Yet with them lies my cure.
And my longing points to the gazelle of the sanctuary
when I allude to the doe of the soft sands.
