1. By God, convey my greeting, O camel-driver,

To the gazelle of the sandy tract, roaming at dusk and dawn.

  2. And tell him: I have a lover's claim upon your dwelling,

For my tears have watered his thirsty abode.

  3. Because of what befell me, I stood in his familiar haunts,

Weeping until the valley flowed with my tears.

  4. And I called out only the name of her who unveiled her face

At night, and the gathering-place shone with her radiance.

  5. Take, O breeze, the dead man's remains, and carry him by night

To the living one, uniting souls with bodies.

  6. And kiss the earth's surface wherever she has glided—

Suad—if you seek to gladden me.

  7. I do not love the bough with its swaying curves

Except for the approach of his swaying figure.

  8. Nor do I deem lightning worthy of my glance,

Except for the way it mirrors his mouth when revealed.
