1. O you who dwell within my heart,

    when shall I attain nearness?

  2. You have robbed me of myself, yet

    I rejoice in being robbed.

  3. O Arabs of Wadi al-Musalla,

you truly are the noblest Arabs.

  4. Your guest is madly enamored,

    his bewildered heart held captive.

  5. Never could I forget your love—

my passion and my love forbid it.

  6. If you consent to restore me,

    that is my heart’s desire.

  7. My spirit is yours, if you accept it—

a lover can offer nothing more than his soul.

  8. You are the treasure of my heart

on Resurrection Day, and you suffice me.

  9. I have loved you—and rightly so,

if I exult from the fullness of my pride.

  10. I sway with drunkenness—and why not,

when from you came my wine?

  11. My beloved has given me drink

and singled me out above my companions.

  12. Now that I have openly beheld

the radiance of my Lord’s face, I no longer

  13. yearn for fragrant rand or willow trees,

nor for tales of a cave or dunes.
