1. O my two friends, why does the heart flutter with grief?

And why do the eye’s tears gush like a spring?

  2. I was created as love willed, obedient to its decree.

So here I am, building and undoing for some time now.

  3. I cast off my bridle in loving him, as though I were

Deaf to the reproachers in love—utterly deaf.

  4. I submitted to a beloved, humbling myself before his might.

Yet he draws away despite my abasement before him, and effaces me.

  5. I would have vanished from sight, were it not for a remnant

Of the heart that keeps love within it, and so it cries out.

  6. A phantom, as wasting has become plain; behind it

A heart drenched in spilled blood.

  7. Empty—but of all except you—and within my breast

A blaze you fan with breaths of yearning.

  8. Your speech is my sweet basil, my solace, and my paradise.

And without it, there is a barrier for the soul in love.

  9. I concealed love—and it is humiliation in truth.

For its call brings grief, and claiming it enfeebles.
