1. In the sanctuary, my rapturous heart recalled

    Nights when the watcher was absent,

  2. And days when life in youthful dalliance was untroubled,

    And the one I love was my boon companion and beloved.

  3. My heart, a stranger among the clan, is in your sanctuary,

    A sojourner in your dwellings, a stranger.

  4. You left the valley's sanctuary just before dawn,

    And you journeyed on, while it trailed behind you, a led mount.

  5. I marveled at your fire on the hills of al-Musalla,

    And from it the lovesick lover melts in Najd;

  6. And at your fragrance, whether far or near,

    Which the south wind carries to the yearning lover.

  7. And even if I hope in you and am disappointed, for everyone

    Other than you, the aim of whoever hopes in him fails.

  8. And within me is one I do not name, out of modesty,

    Because of his presence—for he is the watcher.

  9. His figure sways gracefully, so my heart nearly

    Flies with pleasure when it grows glad.
