1. You put the gazelle's neck to shame with your neck's grace,

    And surpassed it in coy charm and supple grace.

  2. And you had greater claim than the branches to what

    Is ascribed to their limbs: their swaying.

  3. O you who give my soul cups of love to drink,

    And drive my eye into sleeplessness,

  4. Enough for me, for love, and for you is what

    Abandonment does to me; so add no more.

  5. I am the one who sips cheeks; so why

    Do you veil them with cheek hair and chain mail?

  6. You lodged in my heart, then went on to forbid me

    To undo a girdle knotted at the waist.

  7. I bear a longing that Mount Uhud

    Can match; yet I have revealed it to no one.

  8. How numerous are the reproachers over you,

    They have exhausted my defenses as I confront them!

  9. O wonder! Tears flow in Aleppo,

    And the heart is parched—Harran—though fettered in Safad.

  10. By God, O my long night, you have indeed

    Shortened my sleep and brought no morrow.

  11. You have reversed my fortune in love;

    So grant the lovesick lover uninterrupted union,

  12. Until you see me saying in delight:

    O eye, roam, and O lip, come to drink!

  13. You placed in me a passion whose beginnings

    The farthest reaches of eternity fall short of.

  14. You made me drink love's anguish beyond what I can bear;

    And do not exceed my capacity in love.

  15. For whoever, beyond his capacity,

    Bears a burden will find his strength fail; so go gently.

  16. I narrated my slaying on your two eyes' authority; so in

    My account, my death has no chain of transmission.

  17. No one, then, called my account false,

    Since my love was denied by no one.

  18. By God, do not send your eyelids toward

    My heart, for hearts have no defenses.

  19. And spare my eyelid; do not waste it away with sickness:

    In loving you, the soul must have a body.

  20. Being near you does not make me immortal; why, then,

    Did you shoot the arrow of your eyelids into my inmost heart?
