will my heart rejoice in reunion with you?

  2. Will one abode gather us together

    in honor and generous welcome?

  3. Dear people of the encampment—ah, my thirst

    for that sweet watering place!

  4. Oh, how I long for a life

once spent beneath its ample shade,

  5. and for days without reproach

    that passed in loving ʿUtb.

  6. Whenever its nights are recalled,

    the lover’s burning pangs flare up;

  7. and the tale of its moist breeze

revives the heart of one who loves it.

  8. And a veiled beloved whose smile

tears through the darkness of the veils—

  9. his sanctuary is guarded by awe,

not by dusky spears and swords.

  10. Among the moons, his two abodes

are in my eyes and in my heart.

  11. And a gazelle of Naqā, at home with mysteries,

finds companionship not among the herd.
