By the bond of love, O people of Zarud,
Who, I wonder, taught you to break pledges?
Have you perhaps already grown weary of your slave,
Or have you heard the envious one's words about him?
Is every lover of yours treated thus,
Or am I alone singled out for rejection?
Be my masters in whatever way I wish;
In my love for you, I am one of the slaves.
And yours is a deed of bondage, written
With the ink of tears on the parchment of cheeks.
Whenever I sought to claim union with you,
Reverence held me back from approaching.
