O lightnings of the sanctuary, will your tears flow freely?
And has Zarud grown thirsty after the deluge?
Dwellings of Su'da—happy is their guest,
As though necklaces were in those houses.
When she smiles at night, her love-crazed lover weeps;
So from her and from him come a lightning flash and peals of thunder.
And in the camp is a thief with drowsy glances,
And another, robbed of his heart, is lost.
And a tame gazelle of the wilderness—yet he seems
To his beholder, when he turns, shy and elusive.
The water of beauty shimmered in his cheeks,
Yet no thirsty one can approach it to drink.
Ah, is there a return for me to the days of youth?
But that is far beyond reach: what has passed does not return.
As though its nights, for the maker of their beauty,
Were tresses, and the crimson of late afternoon were cheeks.
